For the first time, MIRECO and Horn & Co. Products GmbH have presented the “Mireco Decarbonization Award.” The 2023 award went to Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Specialty Steel GmbH & Co. KG, Siegen Plant (DEW), a subsidiary of the Swiss Steel Group.
Through the use of products with circular raw materials (CRM = circular raw materials) in 2023, supplied by MIRECO and Horn & Co. Products, the company was able to save more than 10,000 t of CO2. This is in comparison to the use of equivalent products manufactured solely from virgin raw materials.
In 2023, this represented the highest CO2 savings (Scope 3 perspective) achieved through the use of products for steel production from MIRECO and Horn & Co. Products. Significant amounts of CO2 are saved at the Siegen plant by using refractory products with high recycling rates.
This depends on the specific performance requirements and needs, which can vary from one steel plant to another. The Swiss Steel Group, which is also this year’s winner of the German Sustainability Award, is making substantial efforts and is not shying away from investments in its pursuit of reducing its own carbon footprint.
