Over the past 25 years, Horn & Co. Analytics has built up a very broad range of services in the fields of materials and environmental analysis as well as hygiene. While the laboratory initially focused solely on refractory and steel analysis, it now also possesses considerable expertise in the fields of sampling, waste classification, water testing, workplace measurements, and many others.
Horn & Co. Analytics has recently expanded its service portfolio once again, enabling us to offer our customers comprehensive analyses. Our range of services now also includes the analysis of asbestos and man-made mineral fibers, surface analysis, corrosion and climate testing, metallography, and materials testing.
Asbestos and man-made mineral fibers (MMMF) are inorganic fibers that were often added to technical (construction) products to improve material properties due to their many beneficial characteristics (e.g. roofing membranes, fiber cement, or insulation wool). However, asbestos and MMMF can become hazardous if handled improperly – for example during renovation or refurbishment work. As an independent, accredited laboratory, Horn & Co. Analytics provides fast and reliable detection of asbestos and MMMF using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) in accordance with current guidelines (e.g. VDI 3866-5).
In the field of surface analysis, Horn & Co. Analytics is now able, thanks to SEM and EDX, to image surfaces at very high magnifications and analyze them chemically. With magnifications of up to 50,000x, objects in the micro- to nanometer range can be visualized. This makes it possible to examine very small inclusions in components, analyze the microstructure of materials, determine coating thickness and chemical composition, identify causes of cracks or fractures, and much more.
With the help of corrosion and climate testing, products from the automotive industry, telecommunications components, or consumer goods can be tested under realistic conditions. These tests are based on requirements and standards relating to material, installation location, and level of stress. These include automotive standards, sanitary standards, DIN standards, ASTM standards, British standards, and others. Materials are tested using modern technological methods in our corrosion testing center.
Within metallography and materials testing, components can be examined to determine whether they meet the specified requirements and standards. This includes, for example, measuring coating thickness, counting micropores, analyzing material structures, and determining adhesion strength. In addition, we can assist in failure analysis, identify causes, resolve issues, and prepare expert reports.
